Our Memberships of the ISPC is not open to everyone. Candidates for membership are required to demonstrate an appropriate level of attainment in their work and qualifications. This may seem, to some extent, restrictive – however, we pursue the very best for our members and the wider public.
Each membership that is paid in full goes towards funding independent counselling/therapeutic colleges and students to ensure everyone has a chance. Help us to create better mental health across every society.

Student Membership
The Student Membership is now completely FREE, showing our commitment to helping counsellors on their path to being fully qualified.
Just starting your Counselling training? Or about to begin your 100hrs Supervised Placement?
Entry is open to students undertaking training in counselling via a reputable college. Student Membership is also open to those who are receiving supervision and about to start their 100 hours placement. Students must provide evidence of their training.
Training must include the Theoretical Approaches to Counselling should be classroom based learning, however, we do accommodate online training now as well.
If you have any disability that means studying online was the only option, please get in touch.
This membership is for those about to embark on their counselling education and students wanting to begin their 100 hours client contact placement as part of their qualification. These hours must be held with genuine clients and be supervised.
Associate Membership
Are you Qualified?
Entry is open to Psychotherapists & Counsellors who have qualified with a Level 4 Advanced Diploma, either taken over 1 year full time, or taken over 2 years part time. We also accept Counselling Degrees and Psychological Degrees.
All training must have been face to face… however, if you have any disability that means studying online was the only option, please get in touch.
Please get in touch if you have different qualifications but feel you can apply for Associate ISPC Membership level.
Training must include Counselling Skills and Counselling Theory as part of their studies.
Evidence of qualifications must be uploaded with the application. All evidence presented with applications will be checked.
Have completed 100 hours of a supervised placement and sufficient supervision undertaken. A supervisors reference must be uploaded with the application form.
The Counsellor must be receiving ongoing supervision and completed personal therapy as required by their training organisation.
Associates must show their willingness to keep up to date with counselling theory in an ever-changing society. Completing 30 hours CPD per year as standardised through your career in Counselling.
Accredited Membership - ISPC(Accredited)
Become Accredited
Entry is open to all Psychotherapists & Counsellors meeting the above criteria and who;
Have 450 hours of tutor led, in person training. (Check our training guide for how this is achieved). Evidence will be required. If you have any disability that means studying online was the only option, please get in touch.
Have been in Practice for 3 years (does not have to be consecutive).
Can provide evidence that 450 hours of supervised practice has been completed.
Have had at least 1.5 hours Supervision per month throughout the duration of the 3 year period.
A report from your supervisor/s that indicates your development.
Can demonstrate Continued Professional Development (CPD) of 30 hours per year throughout the 3 year period.
Full members are entitled to describe themselves as a Member of the International Society of Professional Counsellors and to adopt the ISPC’s designatory letters ISPC(Accredited) as appropriate
Fellow Membership
Saved for the Most Experienced
Entry is open to all Psychotherapists & Counsellors meeting the above criteria and who;
Have been in Practice for 6 years (does not have to be consecutive).
Have had at least 1.5 hours Supervision per month throughout the duration of the 6 year period.
A report from your supervisor/s that indicates your development.
Who also hold the minimum qualification of a counselling/counselling psychology Degree and whose studies included counselling theory. However, we do take experience over pieces of paper. Please do get in touch as we are about fairness and equality.
Can demonstrate Continued Professional Development (CPD) of 30 hours per year throughout the 6 year period.
Fellow Members are entitled to describe themselves as a Fellow of the International Society of Professional Counsellors and adopt the ISPC’s designatory letters FISPC as appropriate.
Memberships and More
Memberships are not open to everyone...
To move from Student Member to Associate Member all you need to do is complete your 1 year (full time) or 2 year (part time) level 4 and meet the above standards set above. Then you can get fully insured as a qualified Therapist and gain your Professional recognition for your hard work.
Please also be mindful that to gain Accredited status you will have needed to have completed many more hours training and been in practice for at least 3 consecutive years.
The best route is to goto our Counsellors Pathway that outlines the Diploma route to becoming a qualified counsellor. There is also the Degree route which is much more money and doesn’t necessarily mean you are a better counsellor. Although, with continual changes in the counselling industry it may mean in the future you may need to top up any diplomas to Degree Level. This. as yet, is unclear.
Through Europe, America, Africa and Asia there are different considerations for becoming a member of our society. This being said, we are open to all applications that promotes helping others and bringing about communities.
What we would like to do is ensure that you, as a member of the ISPC are equipped to be the best you can be, and having up to date information is crucial for your development…and peace of mind.
